One of Virginia's eight original shires, chartered in 1634, and now a suburban county of 234 square miles wrapping Richmond on three sides — west, north and east. There is no county seat in the usual sense; the courthouse functions sit at Parham and in Varina.

It is the working half of the region's economy rather than a commuter belt: roughly 194,000 jobs across 12,600 establishments, with finance, IT, health and life science leading, and Altria headquartered at Reynolds Crossing.

It has also become a data hub in a way few counties are — the QTS campus, the DE-CIX internet exchange and subsea cable landings all sit here, which is why the logistics and power infrastructure keeps growing.

Three interstates meet here and the county maintains its own road network, which is rare in Virginia.

    In Virginia the county sets the rate, runs the school division and maintains the roads — and the lines do not follow the place names, so two houses a mile apart can sit under different rates and different schools.

    West End and East End are different counties in practice.

    The west — Short Pump, Tuckahoe, Innsbrook — is the retail and office concentration, and the densest housing market. The east, around Varina and Sandston, is older, opener and closer to the river. The county line is the same; almost nothing else is.

    Henrico is one of only two counties in Virginia that maintain their own roads rather than handing them to the state. In practice that means paving, snow and drainage are a local call — worth knowing when you compare service levels across a county line.

    I-64, I-95 and I-295 all cross here, Richmond International is six miles east of the city, and Staples Mill Road is the busiest Amtrak station in the South. Very little else in this market has all three.

Suburban, and large enough that the answer depends which end you mean. The West End is dense, retail-heavy and expensive; the East End is opener, older and closer to the river. Both are minutes from Richmond without being in it.

The real estate rate is $0.83 per $100 of assessed value, held unchanged in the budget adopted in April 2026. Some streetlight districts add a small levy and one community development authority adds considerably more, so check what applies at a specific address.

Henrico County Public Schools — 50,916 students across 67 schools in 2024–25, the largest division in this market. At that size, quality and character vary school to school; confirm the zone and the current accreditation for the address you are considering.

I-64, I-95 and I-295 all cross the county, so most of the region is reachable without doubling back through Richmond. The West End's Broad Street corridor is the reliable pinch point at peak.

It straddles the line, and the state files it under Goochland County. The Tuckahoe listed among Henrico's communities is the modern residential district in the county's west end, which is a different thing with the same name.
