Rural Piedmont, about 35 miles southwest of Richmond, carried by farming and forestry — 370 farms averaging 278 acres, and nearly half the county's land in timber.

Distinctive among Virginia counties for its geology: a historic pegmatite and mica mining district that has produced amazonite, feldspar, beryl and garnet, and still draws visitors to the Morefield Gem Mine.

Also the ground where the Confederacy's retreat effectively ended — the Battle of Sailor's Creek here on 6 April 1865 captured roughly a quarter of Lee's remaining army, three days before the surrender at Appomattox.
